Pauline Author now Vicar General for Ordinariate

On January 1, the "Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter" was formally established for Anglican groups in the US who are entering into full communion with the Catholic Church. The Ordinary, Fr. Jeffrey Steenson, will be installed on Feb. 19. His Vicar General is Father Scott Hurd, like Fr. Steenson, a former Episcopalian priest; unlike Fr. Steenson, an author for Pauline Books & Media. (He's also a good friend of the Daughters of St. Paul in Alexandria, VA.)

Catholic Cultural Opportunities in the Loop

In case your new year's resolution included brushing up your knowledge of Catholic faith and life, the Loop is the place to be this first part of 2012!

Here at Pauline, we will continue our Saturday morning adult faith program for Lent, using Fr. Barron's Catholicism DVDs. The sessions will be led by a Chicago seminarian. Call for details or to register: 312-346-4228 The comprehensive study guide and text are optional, but highly recommended. After all, you want this to stick, right?

St Peter's Church (Madison and Clark) has filled the calendar with great Catholic study and discussion programs that are well worth investigating. For more information on the following programs, contact Carolyn Jarosz at ST. Peter's (312-853-2376).

For starters, they are offering four sessions on the book of Revelation. This will be led by Dr. Jim Papandrea, and meets from 12:10-12:50 on the Thursdays of January. Papandrea uses history along with theology to penetrate the meaning of the images in this most controversial (and confusing) book of the Bible.

Looking for cultural enrichment? Join Fr. Bob Sprott on Thursdays in February and March for an exploration of T.S. Eliot's "Four Quartets" (most often encountered in the form of pithy quotes; more rarely in its context). This class doesn't meet every single Thursday, so check St. Peter's website for the exact dates.

If you're not free at lunch hour, Fr. Elric Sampson is offering an evening review of the history of the Catholic Church, Wednesdays from Feb. 1-Mar. 14 (5:30-7:00). This is an introductory "survey" course, not a detailed study of the past 2,000 years.

The book study with Fr. Bob Pawell (Tuesdays of January; noon) will cover Fr. Jim Martin's "Between Heaven and Mirth: Why Joy, Humor and Laughter are at the Heart of the Spiritual Life."

Changes in the Mass: What you can do to help spread the word

Thanksgiving offers a great opportunity to casually mention to your extended family (all of whom may not be especially frequent Mass-goers) that the words of the Mass will be changing this weekend. It would be sad if the Christmas-and-Easter Catholics are so caught off-guard that they feel alienated for good from the Church.

Changes in the Mass!

If you haven't heard already, there will be changes in the translation of the Mass beginning the first Sunday of Advent. Not only is this an opportunity to come to a greater awareness of what the Mass is: it is an occasion to reach out to family and friends who may have drifted away from regular Sunday Mass. Without some kind of advance warning, they may feel alienated from the Church for good if they go to Mass on Christmas (or for a funeral) and find themselves unequipped with the new responses.
To help you help them, Pauline Books & Media is offering three noontime sessions on the new Roman Missal. All sessions are free; each will cover slightly different aspects of the Missal, with plenty of time for your questions. Presenter is Sr Anne Flanagan.

Do you hear what I hear...on Michigan Avenue?

You may notice something new as you walk up to our bookstore entrance...the sounds of the Daughters of St. Paul music! Thanks to Sr Anne's Mom (who donated the outdoor speakers) and to HFI member Bill Perales (who installed them), passers-by get a gentle wave of inspirational music whether they continue on their way or, as some have begun to do, stop and take a look at the source of such an unexpected experience. Sister Frances' beautiful front window treatments add to the invitation and give the location a clearly Catholic identity.
Our summer months are usually pretty quiet, but the recently-installed sound system seems to be encouraging new visitors to step inside. The first thing many people want to know is how long the Pauline center has been here. (Um, thirty years!) It has been consoling to hear several people who, after their first visit, express the intention to make Pauline (and the chapel) their own special sanctuary!

Borders bookstores' final chapter

Is there a place for bookstores in a society where the most avid readers keep their Kindle (or Nook or Kobe or iPad) in their backpack and order books through the ether? This is the question that our community has been discussing since Borders announced it would be closing its last remaining (399) bookstores. Analyses by the Chicago Tribune and the online magazine Slate indicate that the chain made the fatal mistake of focusing more on their brick-and-mortar locations than on the Internet. By the time they attempted to enter the online marketplace in a real way, Amazon and Barnes and Noble had already established themselves securely. Even though Barnes and Noble still faces challenges, it gets a healthy percentage of its income from online sales--something that Borders never managed to do.

While we don't see ourselves going the way of Borders any time soon, the huge chain's experience does challenge us. After all, we have put a great deal of effort and expense into our small national "chain" of Pauline Book & Media Centers, centers our Founder loved to speak of as "not stores, but pulpits from which the Word of God reaches people."

Correction, Tribune: There is still a bookstore on Michigan Ave!

Drive by Chicago's famous Water Tower these days and you'll be struck by the light coming through the windows on the corner of Michigan and Pearson: with no books on display, all you can see is the expanse of floor space and a helter-skelter of empty units. As of last Saturday, the immense Borders bookstore is closed. According to Chicago Tribune writer Mary Schmich, that means that "the city's premier shopping street will be without any bookstore for the first time in decades."
Take heart, Mary! Even if we aren't quite on the Magnificent Mile, there is still a bookstore on North Michigan Avenue!
Granted, we're not exactly Borders, a big-box style bookstore with no limit to categories. Our categories are highly specialized: Biblical; Spirituality; Saints; Theology; Liturgy; Religious Instruction... But we do have a couple of comfortable chairs, a music listening station, and (something Borders could never boast) a tiny chapel where you can meet the One who promised to "give rest for your soul" (cf. Mt. 10: 29).

If your New Year's resolutions included taking some steps toward a more solid, adult understanding of Catholicism, get your calendar out and start marking it!

This Saturday we continue our ongoing study of "Love and Responsibility," an early work of Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II) which reflects his experience as a pastor. If people dismiss Pope John Paul's words on marriage because he himself was not married, they are forgetting that he was the spiritual guide for a number of couples and listened deeply to them. When we read "Love and Responsibility" or "Theology of the Body" we are listening to them, too, through the theological lens of their saintly pastor. Saturday we meet at 10:30 here at the bookstore (ask to be admitted to the conference room); Father Thomas Loya will be our guide for this free morning study.

Next week we begin our 20-week Scripture program, using the Great Adventure DVD series (but with an on-site facilitator). This is a Bible overview program. Class starts at 10:30, and runs every Saturday (except the 2nd Saturday of the month) from January 15 through June 25. BYOB: Bring your own Bible! Window Stopping on Michigan Avenue

There's a new Christmas window "must-see" downtown this year! It's at...172 N. Michigan Avenue, and the surprised passers-by are halting in their tracks to get a second look.

The 27-inch tall Nativity figures are the work of Joseph's Studio. The full set (11 figures plus the stable) pretty much fills our front window. As the crowds pass by this evening to go to the "Festival of Lights" just north of us, how many families will pause here (like some we've already seen), with the parents going to their knees to retell the story of the First Christmas to children whose hands are folded in spontaneous prayer? How many jaded Christmas shoppers will take a second look, and remember why they're celebrating the season--or even cross themselves in remembrance?

Recently, I dubbed The Human Person According to John Paul II, by J. Brian Bransfield, “one of the best books I’ve read in a lonnnng time (maybe ever).” It’s time to support that statement with a few reasons why you should not only pick it up and read it, but also buy it for your parish library and your best friend.
This book is approachable. The most compelling reason I have for wanting to stand from my rooftop and trumpet to everyone I know that they should read this book is that it’s approachable AND that it makes the whole idea behind Theology of the Body (republished in an expanded form recently as Man and Woman He Created Them), John Paul II’s great masterpiece (which is also online), approachable.
TOB is a HUGE undertaking to read and an even bigger undertaking to understand and unpack. I’ve read a host of other authors who have tried it, and who have done well. But this is the first book that I felt like I could hand to my friends, my husband, and my pastor with absolutely no compunction. It’s one of the only books I have purchased after receiving a review copy, and one of an even smaller number that I know I’ll be buying again.
There’s heavy, deep stuff in this book, because that’s the topic, but it’s written in a way that makes you comfortable. My husband thought, for the first two-thirds of the book, that I was reading a novel, and his eyebrows were lost in his hairline for a day or two when he found out it was nonfiction.

Re-introducing Sister Frances!

The end of summer means a lot of things ("Back to School" is only the most commercially visible of them). For the Daughters of St. Paul, it can mean transfer time--and so it was for our Chicago community as we welcomed Sister Frances back to the Windy City. Sister Frances is no stranger to Chicago: she was the manager of our Michigan Avenue center from 1996-2000, and oversaw the renovation that put a new facade on the street and a lovely new interior to the center itself.
After leaving Chicago, Sister Francis spent the next ten years in California, where she focused much of her time and energy on care for her parents (who died within a year of each other) and managing our SoCal locations in Culver City and San Diego. Now that she's back, Sister Frances says, "I'm totally impressed by the expansion and growth in the city. I can't believe how much it (and the traffic!) has grown."
Sister Frances brings with her a wealth of artistic ability and experience. After meeting the Daughters of St. Paul in Cleveland, she followed her sister Margaret in entering the community. (Sister Margaret is stationed in our Boston community.) From her very first days in the convent, Sister Frances worked in the graphic design department of our publishing house. Moving to the book center ministry, she excelled in the design aspects of our locations. Now she's enrolling in the program in Interior Architecture and Design at the Illinois Art Institute to get some theory to refine her many years of practice.
Sister Frances is delighted to be back to renew old friendships and make new ones; we're just delighted to have her back!

New online study starting soon!

Our Theology of the Body class will resume on the 2nd Saturday of the month, beginning in just 10 days. Instead of going through the tome of John Paul's Wednesday talks ("the" source of the Theology of the Body), we will be studying Karol Wojtyla's earlier work, "Love and Responsibility." People who think that the Theology of the Body was just the Pope's after-the-fact attempt to justify the Church's teachings in the widely-scorned encyclical "Humanae Vitae" will be surprised to see that "Love and Responsiblity," first published in Polish in 1960, is the real precursor to the Theology of the Body.

Movie "Transforms" the Pauline block

Over the past several days, the back door of our Michigan Avenue center has been the scene of epic disaster. "Scene" as in "movie," that is. Sister Helena wrote a blog post about navigating the set of "Transformers 3" at our back door, and (literally) running into stars Shia La Beouf and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

Catholic Bloggers for the Trib

Since last autumn, our Sister Anne Flanagan has written several guest posts for the Chicago Tribune's spirituality blog, "The Seeker." She has been one of a number of voices representing quite a variety of faith communities (including non-faith, secular humanist communities), addressing issues of concern to Chicagoans generally. More recently, two Chicago priests have been added to the Tribune's guest blog roll, Father Michael Phleger (pastor of Saint Sabina's) and the genial Father Robert Barron (charged in a special way by the Cardinal with the efforts to evangelize culture).

Today, both Sr Anne and Fr. Barron offered contributions on the controversy surrounding the Vatican document on "grave crimes," which has been widely represented as putting the attempted ordination of women on the same level as sexual abuse of children (it doesn't).

Lenten events

Sister Anne will be giving a series of talks on the Mass at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Parish as part of their "Soup and Substance" Lenten program, Wednesdays from Feb. 24-March 17. The evening begins with 6:30 Mass, followed by a hearty soup and then the presentation.

Assumption Parish has also invited Sister Anne to give a talk on March 24 as part of its Lenten series. Her presentation will be on Eucharistic Adoration.

The Daughters of St. Paul are loading up the van for parish book and media displays at Our Lady of the Woods Parish, Orland Park, and Sts Peter and Paul, Naperville. Contact the parishes for details.
